Духовске задушнице - Pentecost Memorial Saturday May 30, 2026.

Познате и као летње задушнице, увек су у суботу пред Духове (Силазак Светог Духа). Тога дана врши се помен "од века усопшим благочастивим Хришћанима, оцима, браћи и сестрама нашим."
Није познато од када потиче ово помињање умрлих уочи Духова. У најстаријим правилима нема спомена о томе, али се ове задушнице помињу већ од 12. века. Наводи се да се одлази на гробове блиских, да би се запалиле свеће и гробови окадили тамјаном.
Код нашег народа су ове задушнице, назване летњима, увек биле важне и држале су се широм српства.
Црква и верници се присећају умрлих, призивају се у спомен њихова добра дела и чврста вера, а узноси се молитва да им Господ буде милостив због греха, које су свесно и несвесно учинили, за време овоземаљског живота. Свети Јован Златоусти, један од највећих богослова IV века, каже: “Помозите покојнима и помињите их. Не оклевајте, дакле, да помогнете онима који су отишли и принесите ваше молитве за њих”. Осим за покојне, молитве чине добро и онима који се моле – осећају везу света живих и мртвих, њихово јединство у Господу.

Also known as the Summer Memorial Saturdays, they always fall on the Saturday before Pentecost (the Descent of the Holy Spirit). On this day, a memorial service is offered for “all pious Christians who have fallen asleep throughout the ages — our fathers, brothers, and sisters.”
It is not known exactly when this commemoration of the departed before Pentecost began. The earliest Church rules do not mention it, but these memorial observances are recorded as early as the 12th century. It is noted that people visited the graves of their loved ones in order to light candles and cense the graves with incense.
Among our people, these memorial Saturdays, known as the Summer Memorial Saturdays, have always been important and observed throughout the Serbian Orthodox world.
The Church and the faithful remember the departed, recalling their good deeds and steadfast faith, while offering prayers that the Lord may show them mercy for the sins they committed knowingly and unknowingly during their earthly life. Saint John Chrysostom, one of the greatest theologians of the 4th century, says: “Help those who have departed and commemorate them. Do not hesitate, therefore, to help those who have gone before us and to offer your prayers for them.”
Besides benefiting the departed, these prayers also do good for those who pray — they strengthen the sense of connection between the world of the living and the dead, and their unity in the Lord.
